Stewart County High School proudly recognized excellence during its STAR Student and STAR Teacher Recognition Ceremony held February 19, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.
Austin Keith was named STAR Student, selecting Dr. Vijay as his STAR Teacher. The ceremony was attended by Austin’s family and distinguished guests, including Dr. Shonda Green, Superintendent of Stewart County Schools; Dr. Pierre Coffey, Principal; Dr. Busani Siphambili, Assistant Principal; Mrs. Cherika Ashford, School Counselor; Mr. Maurice Simmons of the Stewart County Alumni Association; and Mr. Christopher Kelly representing the office of Congressman Sanford Bishop.
In his remarks, Austin encouraged his peers not to let their environment limit their aspirations. He shared that one-on-one time with teachers, especially Dr. Vijay, greatly contributed to his success. Admitting that procrastination has been a personal challenge, he advised students to avoid the habit and to “put yourself in uncomfortable positions to grow.”
Dr. Vijay reflected on Austin’s journey, calling him an inspiration. She emphasized that teaching is about building relationships and helping students believe in themselves.
Superintendent Dr. Shonda Green noted that what made the occasion especially meaningful was the strong connection between Austin and Dr. Vijay. Principal Dr. Coffey added that Austin’s achievement represents hard work and dedication, expressing hope that his success inspires the entire student body. “It really is cool to be smart,” he shared.
Both the STAR Student and STAR Teacher received gifts, awards, and special recognitions from Stewart County Schools, Congressman Sanford Bishop’s office, and the Stewart County Alumni Association. In a heartfelt moment, Dr. Vijay also presented Austin with a special award in honor of his accomplishments and their shared journey.
The ceremony highlighted not only academic excellence but also the power of mentorship, perseverance, and belief in one’s potential.
